McKinney-Vento Public Notice
Support for Families Experiencing Housing Instability

If your current living situation is temporary and caused by financial hardship, your child may qualify for educational support through the McKinney-Vento Act. This law is designed to help students stay in school and succeed, even during times of housing instability.

You may qualify if your family is:

  • Living temporarily with friends or relatives due to loss of housing or inability to afford rent.

  • Staying in a shelter.

  • Living in a motel or hotel.

  • Staying in a location not typically used as a residence, such as a car, park, or campground.

Students who qualify have the right to:

  • Stay in their current school, even if your family has to move outside the district, as long as it is in the student’s best interest.

  • Attend the school in the area where they are currently staying.

  • Remain in that school for the rest of the school year, even if you move again.

  • Receive help with transportation to and from school.

  • Start school right away, even without all the required documents (such as immunization records).

  • Enroll in school without a permanent address.

  • Get free breakfast and lunch, and other academic support through Title I services.

Homeless Education

Provides information and resources for homeless children and youth and their right to enroll, attend, participate fully, and succeed in school.

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (McKinney-Vento Act) (42 U.S.C. § 11431-11435) is federal legislation that ensures the educational rights and protections of children and youth experiencing homelessness. It requires all local educational agencies (LEAs) to ensure that homeless students have access to the same free, appropriate public education, including public preschools, as provided to other children and youth. The McKinney-Vento Act defines LEAs as public school districts, direct-funded and locally funded charter schools, and county offices of education. The McKinney-Vento Act also authorizes the funding for the federal Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program.
